The aortic disease/surgery program at the NBHC was developed with the philosophy of an integrative and multidisciplinary (cardiac surgery, cardiology, interventional radiology and vascular surgery) approach to patients with all facets of aortic disease. The NBHC provides state of the art diagnosis, management and surveillance of aortic disease. With an active Aortic Disease Clinic, we are dedicated to providing the best possible care for all patients with aortic disease, including those with connective tissue disorders such as Marfan syndrome.
There are many patients in the province with thoracic aortic disease consisting of multiple pathologies including aneurysms for which care and follow-up has traditionally been inconsistent and non-standardized. The multidisciplinary Aortic Disease Clinic at the NBHC serves to consolidate the care and surveillance of these patients with the assistance of the primary care physician and referring specialist.
Another significant component that is evolving is the endovascular surgical management of aortic disease. This state of the art technology is and will continue to revolutionize and cause a paradigm shift in the management of aortic disease. This constitutes a minimally invasive approach utilizing stent graft technology, thus avoiding large incisions and increased surgical risks often associated with conventional open surgery.
